Gateshead Thunder is the North East’s only professional rugby league club and is the highest placed sporting club in Gateshead – the 2009 squad includes a number of professional players trained in the local area and players who have played at the top level in Europe and Australia, including Welsh, Scottish and Fijian internationals
Gateshead Thunder secured promotion to rugby league’s recently renamed Co-operative Championship (the 2nd tier of professional rugby league) in August 2008, winning the final home match against Doncaster live on Sky TV.
The season runs from February until September with at least 12 home games and maybe more depending on cup draws and qualification for the end of season play-offs. National League One is featured every Thursday live on Sky TV.
The club also competes in the Northern Rail Cup, which receives SKY TV coverage, and the Carnegie Challenge Cup, which has 9 matches broadcast live on BBC each season.
Gateshead Thunder’s home is Gateshead International Stadium, an international level, all seater 12,000 capacity stadium and hosts corporate entertainment at its partner nearby Hilton, Newcastle Gateshead. Rugby league is a family orientated sport which aims to place itself in the heart of its local community.
